Application procedures and admission conditions

 Institute (or cash if hand delivered) must accompany your application.
4.Application letters should be posted or hand delivered, the deadline is two weeks before the intake time indicated.

NOTE: On admission, all full-time students pay other levies amounting to Ksh. 5,723, while part-time students pay Ksh. 600.
Full -time classes are conducted between 8.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m daily on weekdays
Part -time classes  are conducted between  12.00 to 2.00 p.m and 4.00 p.m to 6.00 p.m and  Saturdays (where applicable)

The college started as a Secondary School in 1951 offering tuition to the predominantly Asian Community of Ngara.  At Independence the Secondary school was converted to technical High School to offer basic Engineering skills.  The main courses then were Mechanical Engineering, carpentry and Joinery; and it also had two ‘A’ level classes offering mainly Science oriented courses.
Following the implementation of the 8.4.4 system of education, all technical secondary schools were in 1986 converted to technical training Institutions.  The Institute began to offer Craft and Diploma courses in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Installation, Motor Vehicle Mechanics, Science Laboratory Technology, Supplies Management and Accounting and Finance among others.

Grown from strength to strength and offers a wide variety of courses at Certificate, Craft and Diploma levels as detailed herein:-

1. BUSINESS EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
The department is dynamic and fast growing offering the following courses;

  1. Business Administration – Offered at both Diploma and Certificate levels on fulltime and part-time basis.  Successful trainees work as clerical officers, Administrators and managers in all sectors of the economy (for details refer to appendices).
  2. Supplies Management – The course is examined at Certificate, Craft and Diploma both on full time and part time basis.  Graduates are employed in supplies and procurement as stores managers, stock controllers, purchasing managers etc.
  3. Secretarial – Offered at Diploma and Certificate levels; with intensive coverage of relevant computer packages.  Trainees enter the job market as personal assistants, administrative secretaries, office managers etc.
  4. Accounting and Finance – A variety of courses are offered in this field which include KATC, KAME and CPA Examined by KASNEB and ICM – London.  The graduates work as accounts clerk, accountants, auditors, financial managers etc.
  5. Computing and information processing – Information technology is an integral part of all business courses however those who aspirations are to work as database managers, data entry clerks, computer technicians etc can undertake Certificate of Diploma course examined by ICM (London).  On completion the trainees are employed in the legal profession as court clerks, court administrators and assistants to advocates.
  6. Legal Studies – The course is offered on part time basis only and examined by ICM (London).  On completion the trainee are employed in the legal profession as court clerk, court administrators and assistants to advocates.
  7. Human Resource Management – Offered on full time basis.  It equips trainees with skills to work as personnel managers, personnel clerks, human relations officers and trade unionists.
  8. Sales and Marketing – Offered on part time basis and examined by ICM.  The course prepares trainees to work as sales managers, salesmen and marketing specialists.

2. APPLIED SCIENCE
The department concentrates in the provision of technical skills in areas related to Applied Science and Medical courses which include:

    • Medical Laboratory Course – Offered at both Diploma and Certificate levels, aims at training Medical Laboratory technologists who can serve both in public and private hospitals, tertiary institutions, universities etc.
    • Pharmacy Course – The need for qualified pharmacists is high and the Institute therefore offers the course at both diploma and Certificate levels.  The successful trainees deployed to serve as Pharmacy assistants etc.
    • Chemical Engineering – This course is only offered at Diploma level with the aim of training chemical engineers who can work in chemical firms as quality controllers, production managers, sales and Research and Development officers.
    1. Analytical Chemistry – It’s a three year Diploma course which prepares technologists in the field of analytical and applied chemistry who can be deployed as laboratory managers or industrial chemistry technologists.
    2. Applied Biology – A competitive course which trains graduates to be absorbed in areas of research (e.g. KARI, ILRI, etc), museums and also as laboratory technologists in learning institutions and industrial organizations.  It is offered at Diploma level for duration of 3 years.
    3. Food Science Technology – This 3 year diploma course deals mainly in the principles of food quality controls, food processing equipment and machinery and the technology of specific products.  On successful completion of the course, job opportunities exist in the dairy, beverage, sugar, food confectionaries industries (as supervisors and quality controllers etc).
    4. Science Laboratory Technology- It is a craft Certificate course which takes two years.  Trainees who complete the course have the opportunity to advance for Diploma course in applied biology, analytical chemistry, chemical engineering, etc.  Alternatively, the trainee can work in the following areas; research Institutions, chemical and pharmaceutical companies and general laboratories as technicians.
    5. Bio-Medical Technology – This is internally examined and aims at preparing trainees whose future aspirations are to work as medical technologists, paramedical and veterinary research assistants and in other laboratories related to medical field both for human beings and animals.

    3. ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS DEPARTMENT
    The department has two sections, i.e. Electrical and Electronics, both offering courses at various levels i.e. Diploma, Certificate and specialized courses.  The successful trainees at various levels can be employed in the fast growing electrical and electronics sectors of the economy as engineers, technicians, supervisors, production managers etc.  Opportunities also exist in self – employment for repairs, installation and sales men of various electrical and electronics components.

    4. INSTITUTIONAL MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT
    The department has two main sections i.e.

    1. Clothing Section – Offers courses at both Diploma and Craft certificate levels, which are aimed at the provision of skills to technicians and craftsmen in the clothing industry as well as fashion design sand garment pattern producers.  At the lower level i.e. craft certificate, trainees acquire skills to work as dressmakers and tailors in making quality and marketable garments as well as supervisory roles at operational level.  Both cadres of trainees have got opportunities in self-employment.
    2. Catering Section – Training is geared towards those who may wish to work in the hospitality industry as supervisors in the kitchens, restaurants, front office etc.  It also offers trainees with skills on food production (craft), waiters, cateress and other related areas including self – employment.

    5. AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT
    The motor vehicle Industry both formal and informal is one of the fastest growing sectors in the Kenyan economy as can be witnessed by the ever increasing volume of traffic on Kenyan roads.  Service repair and maintenance is an integral part of day to day motoring and the department endeavors to equip the trainees with the relevant skills to cope especially given that technology is becoming more and more sophisticated.
    Courses are offered at Certificate, Craft and Diploma levels.

    6. MECHANICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT
    The Department has three workshops each equipped with various production machines, tool store and welding bays with arch – welding machines and oxy-acetylene sets.
    The department offers courses at Certificate, craft and Diploma levels.
    Diploma in Mechanical Production option graduates are employed in tool rooms, workshops,and in the production floors of manufacturing companies while plant option graduates are     employed as maintenance technicians, foremen as supervisors.
